Feeling Like a Man:
Using AEDP to Overcome Shame and Heal Attachment Trauma
with Gay and Straight Men

Benjamin Lipton, LCSW & Ben Medley, LCSW-R

"Both Ben and Ben showed us fierce love of the work and clients through strong softness. We heard, saw and felt how the shame that accompanies so many men, whether about their sexuality or just the fact that they have feelings at all, has been shameful. And, that shame can be undone through the explicit use of an empathic connection in a safe and strong environment."
- Jeanne Newhouse, NCPsyA.

"Both Bens covered these themes in detail with humor, frankness and insight, and both showed marvelous videos of sessions with gay and straight men. It was a powerful day, an important day, a provocative and evocative day for me. I feel so grateful to these two eloquent presenters for their willingness to bring these issues into my awareness, to our community and into our clinical discussions."
- Matt Fried, PhD.

"I have had the privilege of attending and hosting Benjamin's seminars for over a decade, and can attest that he is an expert clinician and masterful teacher. His work and his way of being when sharing his work are truly transformative. I so look forward to attending this seminar!"
- Miriam Marsolais, PhD.

"Benjamin is a skilled and compassionate therapist, and a wonderful teacher."
- Gerard Ilaria, Dept. of Medicine, Cornell University.

"Benjamin Lipton is a very talented teacher, mentor, and therapist. Being with Ben is to witness a master of his craft, where work is more a form of effortless artistic engagement. He makes the very complex simple in both language and in modeling how to "do it" in a way that is always refreshing and inspiring."
- Ian MacNaughton, Ph.D. Vancouver.

David Mars PhD Benjamin Lipton, LCSW, (left) is a founding, Senior Faculty member of the AEDP Institute. He teaches and supervises clinicians learning AEDP around the US and abroad. Ben’s open, engaging teaching style and skill in translating complex ideas into clear and accessible learning points receives consistent praise from his audiences. Ben has numerous publications in textbooks, journals, and magazines. He maintains a private practice in New York City.

Ben Medley LCSW-R, has a private practice in the Flatiron District, NYC where he works with individuals and couples. Ben earned his degree with NYU’s clinical social work program and is a Certified AEDP Therapist as well as a Certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist. Before private practice, he worked as a therapist in the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services outpatient mental health clinic as a member of their LGBTQ treatment unit.

Using extensive videotape from their clinical work, the presenters will illustrate specific ways that AEDP can be used to address the therapeutic needs of men that so often center on shame and aloneness.

In Feeling Like a Man you’ll learn:

• How to recognize and undo shame with male clients

• How homophobia and heterosexism impact both gay and straight men

• How to use AEDP - including self-disclosure and dyadic regulation of affect - to undo aloneness and foster secure connection with male clients

• How to use the AEDP technique of metaprocessing to anchor new emotional and relational experiences to help heal trauma and build resilience

Note: This workshop will be videotaped for producing professional training material. Designated seats will be provided for those who do not want to be videotaped.
